Macau Welcomes Nearly 1.4 Million Visitors During Chinese New Year

According to the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the total number of visitors during the Chinese New Year holiday period reached approximately 1.36 million. This exceeded initial expectations, which had estimated an average of around 120,000 visitors per day. Instead, the actual daily average soared to 169,725, nearly matching the pre-pandemic daily average of 171,702 recorded in 2019.

Hotel Occupancy Rates

The influx of tourists has also had a positive impact on the hospitality sector. During the holiday period, hotel occupancy rates reached 95.2%. This figure represents a nearly 10 percentage point increase compared to the previous year.

Visitor Origins

This equates to approximately 1.04 million visitors from the mainland, with an average daily arrival rate of around 129,000. Notably, this figure surpasses the 2019 levels, achieving a recovery rate of 101.3%.

Record-Breaking Days

February 12, 2024, marked a significant milestone for Macau, as it recorded its highest single-day visitor count since before the pandemic, with nearly 218,000 arrivals. This day, known as the third day of the Chinese New Year, highlighted the peak of the festive celebrations and the city’s appeal as a travel destination.
