Michigan Sportsbooks Post 5.63% Hold Rate in June 2026

Michigan sportsbooks took $372,480,495 in wagers in June 2026 while recording a 5.63% hold rate, a modest improvement from May’s 5.17% hold. The June handle represented a decline of $92.3 million, or 19.9%, from the previous month. In spite of the monthly drop, the market demonstrated year-over-year growth of 20.2% against a soft 2025 base. Michigan sports betting operators faced compressed margins due to aggressive promotional spending on free bets and bonuses during the tournament period. The state collected $2,066,595 in tax revenue at an 8.4% rate, down 45.7% from June 2025. The figures reveal a market balancing growth against promotional costs.
Michigan Sportsbooks Record 5.63% Hold Rate in June 2026
Michigan commercial and tribal operators reported USD 40.10 million in online sports betting gross receipts for June 2026, contributing to a combined total of USD 341.30 million when paired with internet gaming revenue. The combined figure marked a 10.8% decrease from May 2026. Despite the hold rate improvement, gross revenue plummeted 53.7% compared to the previous month.
Online sports betting operators subsequently submitted USD 1.50 million in taxes and fees to the State of Michigan during June. The state’s total tax and fee collection across both iGaming and online sports betting reached USD 62.30 million for the month, with iGaming taxes and fees accounting for USD 60.80 million. Sports betting tax revenue flows primarily to the state’s School Aid Fund, supporting K-12 public education. Additional allocations direct funds toward the First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund and the Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund.
The 5.63% hold represented a notable recovery from April 2026, when Michigan sports betting operators recorded a 5.39% hold rate amid maximum promotional deductions. In fact, February 2026 produced a 6.64% hold on USD 391.10 million in wagers, generating USD 26.00 million in revenue.
Handle Falls 19.9% From May as World Cup Fails to Boost Wagering
The tournament expected to drive record wagering failed to materialize gains for Michigan sports betting operators. Despite the World Cup Final garnering roughly 2 million wagers for DraftKings Sportsbook nationally, marking the most bets for a soccer match in the operator’s history, Michigan missed the World Cup bump other states experienced.
Combined gross igaming and sports betting receipts in Michigan totaled USD 169.30 million, down 8.9% from USD 185.50 million in May. The June decline marked the third consecutive month of decreasing receipts in the state. Gross sports betting receipts reached USD 18.30 million, representing a 48.0% drop from May’s USD 35.20 million.
Year-over-year comparisons revealed mixed signals for Michigan sportsbooks. The June 2026 combined total exceeded June 2022’s USD 136.90 million by 23.7%. Gross sports betting receipts similarly posted an 18.8% increase against the June 2022 baseline.
The consecutive monthly declines exposed structural challenges within the state’s betting market. Operators allocated substantial resources toward promotional campaigns ahead of the tournament, yet wagering activity contracted rather than expanded. Revenue compression intensified as handle decreased while promotional spending remained elevated during the World Cup period.
Promotional Arms Race Compresses Margins Before Tournament
Operators maximized Michigan’s unlimited promotional deduction structure during the World Cup period, compressing profit margins across the market. Michigan sportsbooks offered combined promotional bonuses exceeding USD 5,800 in value to new bettors during June and July 2026. World Cup-specific promotions added nearly USD 6,000 in bonuses from top online sportsbooks, including FanDuel, DraftKings, bet365, BetMGM, Hard Rock, and Fanatics Sportsbook.
The competitive promotional landscape intensified as operators positioned themselves for tournament wagering. bet365 Michigan, the newest entrant to the state, welcomed users with USD 150 in bonus bets on wagers of USD 10 or more. BetMGM provided up to USD 1,500 in bonus bets for losing first wagers, while Fanatics offered 10 bet matches of USD 100 each over 10 days. DraftKings distributed USD 150 in bonus bets after minimum USD 5 deposits, and FanDuel granted up to USD 1,000 in bet reset tokens.
Promotional spending directly impacted reported hold rates owing to Michigan’s deduction policy. Operators recorded a 5.39% hold in April 2026 as they maxed out the state’s unlimited promotional deduction on USD 470 million in handle.
