The Rank Group has announced the potential permanent closure of the Grosvenor Casino Reading Central, citing severe financial headwinds and a six-year streak of operating losses. The proposed shutdown of the Queen’s Street venue underscores ongoing commercial challenges within the land-based casino sector.

According to a letter sent to employees by Rank Group – the parent company of Grosvenor Casinos – the venue suffered an operating loss of £500,000 in the last financial year alone, contributing to a combined deficit of £2.3 million over the past six years. Internal financial data revealed that revenue performance fell £630,000, or 19 percent, below budget. Furthermore, while the casino’s operating costs have increased by 2 percent over the last eight years, revenue has contracted by 20 percent during the same period. Financial projections indicated that remaining operational would yield an additional £400,000 in losses over the next year.

Addressing these stark financial metrics, the Rank Group’s letter to employees noted, “These financial challenges have resulted in a position where continued operation of the venue may no longer be commercially sustainable.”

The company emphasized its fiscal responsibility to the broader enterprise, adding: “Therefore, having carefully considered all available options, the company is proposing the permanent closure of Reading Central. The proposal has not been made lightly. However, the company believes closure may be necessary to mitigate ongoing financial losses, protect the overall health of the wider business and enable resources and investment to be focused on those areas with stronger commercial prospects and long-term growth potential.”

While the proposed closure aims to prioritize corporate sustainability and mitigate fiscal bleeding, it places dozens of local jobs at risk. Balancing these commercial realities with workforce impacts, the Rank Group emphasized that “no final decisions regarding redundancies will be made until the consultation process has been completed.”

A spokeswoman for Grosvenor Casinos reiterated this commitment to staff welfare during the transition phase, stating, “We can confirm that we have taken the difficult decision to begin a consultation process to explore options for the long-term sustainability of Grosvenor Casino Reading Central. We are working closely with our team members in Reading Central to ensure we keep them updated and informed as we go through this process.”

The anticipated closure of the Reading Central casino – one of two Grosvenor locations in the town – highlights the acute economic pressures facing specific segments of the brick-and-mortar gaming industry. As Rank Group shifts its strategic focus toward venues with stronger commercial prospects, this development serves as a critical indicator for industry professionals monitoring the viability of regional UK casinos. The ongoing consultation process will ultimately determine the final outcome for the venue and its workforce, marking a pivotal shift in Grosvenor’s operational footprint.
