Massachusetts sports betting market posted a strong performance in April 2026, with operators processing $678.4 million in total wagers. Online platforms accounted for $670.7 million of that figure, while retail sportsbooks at the state’s three casinos handled the remaining $7.7 million. Gross gaming revenue across all sports betting Massachusetts operators reached $81.8 million on a 12.3% statewide hold, generating $16.3 million in state tax revenue. Significantly, DraftKings and FanDuel combined for 75% of all online handle, representing an unusually concentrated duopoly even by industry standards.

Massachusetts Sports Betting Handle Reaches $678.4M in April 2026

The April 2026 handle of $679.69 million represented a 1.2% decrease from March levels, yet operators experienced a revenue surge of 23% during the same period. This divergence between declining wagering volume and increasing revenue reflects improved hold percentages across Massachusetts sports betting platforms. The state collected $16.31 million in tax revenue from April operations, distributed across multiple funds designated for workforce development, public health, and local aid initiatives.

Category 3 Sports Wagering Licensees, which include mobile operators such as DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars Sportsbook, BetMGM, ESPNBet, Fanatics Betting & Gaming, and Bally Bet, face a 20% tax rate on gross sports wagering revenue. Category 1 operators, consisting of EBH, MGM, and PPC running retail sportsbooks at casino properties, pay 15% on taxable revenue. The tax allocation splits revenue across five state funds: 45% to the General Fund, 27.5% to Gaming Local Aid, 17.5% to Workforce Investment Trust, 9% to Public Health Trust, and 1% to Youth Development.

Since sports wagering launched in Massachusetts on January 31, 2023 for retail betting and March 10, 2023 for online platforms, the Commonwealth has accumulated approximately $434.30 million in total taxes and assessments.

DraftKings and FanDuel Control 75% of Market Share

DraftKings maintains clear leadership in the Massachusetts sports betting market, generating $46 million in revenue during April 2026, representing over half of all operator revenue in the state. FanDuel secured second position with $24 million in revenue, capturing a 28% market share. The two operators combined control over four-fifths of all revenue in Massachusetts, establishing a concentrated duopoly that leaves five other operators competing for single-digit market shares.

This Massachusetts pattern mirrors national trends, where FanDuel and DraftKings command approximately 78% of all sports betting gross gaming revenue nationwide. Specifically, FanDuel holds the top national position with an estimated 44% market share, while DraftKings maintains 34%. However, Massachusetts presents an exception to this national hierarchy. Conversely, DraftKings dominates the Massachusetts market with nearly double FanDuel’s revenue, despite FanDuel’s stronger performance in most other U.S. states.

The market concentration reflects substantial barriers to entry for smaller operators. Industry analysts estimate customer acquisition costs between $300 and $500 per first-time depositor, creating financial obstacles that have forced several brands to exit markets entirely. Fanatics ranks third among Massachusetts operators with $5.8 million in revenue, followed by BetMGM at $4.7 million.

Caesars captured 5.84% of the Massachusetts sports betting market despite processing $24 million in handle, reflecting operational challenges that extend beyond brand recognition. While Caesars acquired British bookmaker William Hill for $2.90 billion and possessed established gambling brands through properties like Caesars Palace and MGM Grand in Las Vegas, these advantages failed to translate into significant market penetration.
